Lesson Types
Our Lessons
The Standen Swim Academy offers different types of lessons to fully cater to whatever our learners need, whether it’s sibling learning in a small group session, private lessons for a more nervous swimmer, adult and child lessons for younger swimmers, and even Special Educational Needs tailored sessions with our brilliant qualified teacher Vikki Townsend. For more information on our SEN classes, check out our page on it.
We run term time lessons, ideal for continuous learning, building strong relationships with our brilliant teachers, and developing life long water confidence and swimming skills.
We also offer holiday courses, either 2 or 5 days, where swimmers can build skills quickly, improve technique, and gain confidence in the water over a shorter period of time. Both our term time lessons and holiday course are available in our three different Hampshire local venues; Three Oaks Pool, Winchester College, and Twyford School.
If you have any questions about our lesson types, please feel free to email us or send us a Whatsapp message.
30 Min Group Lessons
Our 30-minute group lessons have a maximum of just three swimmers per class, allowing us to provide a much more individual approach than you might expect from a traditional group swimming lesson.
With such small class sizes, our teachers have plenty of time to work with each swimmer individually, adapting their teaching to suit different abilities, confidence levels and learning styles. Swimmers benefit from lots of personal attention and feedback, while still enjoying the fun, encouragement and social experience of learning alongside others.
Small groups also mean less waiting and more swimming. With more time actively practising skills in the water, teachers can continually build on each swimmer's progress, helping them develop confidence, improve their technique and work towards their individual swimming goals.
Private Lessons
Our private 1:1 and 1:2 and 1: 3 lessons are available to swimmers of all ages and abilities and are tailored entirely around the individual needs and goals of each swimmer.
Private lessons are a great option for a nervous or less confident child who would benefit from extra reassurance and individual attention; siblings or friends who would like to learn together; an adult learning to swim or looking to improve their confidence; or a competitive squad swimmer wanting focused work on a particular stroke, skill or technique.
Whether swimming individually or as a pair, our teachers adapt each lesson to the swimmer, working at their pace and focusing on the areas that will benefit them most. The additional individual attention allows teachers to really get to know their swimmers and can be a fantastic way to build confidence, refine technique and make focused progress.
1 Hour Swim Fit Lessons
Our one-hour Swim Fit lessons are designed for more advanced swimmers who want to continue improving their technique, fitness, stamina and overall swimming ability and technique
Lessons are varied and challenging, combining all four strokes, starts, turns, diving, distance and speed work with aquatic skills such as sculling, treading water, underwater skills, water polo and water safety.
With a maximum of just four swimmers per class, teachers can set individual targets while swimmers enjoy the motivation of training alongside others. Swimmers can also work towards a range of advanced swimming, water polo, diving, water safety and Challenge Awards.
Swim Fit is a great next step for swimmers who want to keep learning, stay challenged and become stronger, more confident swimmers.
Adult and Child Lessons
Our baby and toddler classes are run with a max of 5 babies or toddlers accompanied in the water by their parents or carers, making sure each swimmer has a chance to bond with their parent or carer and build a relationship of trust.
We take our little ones through from their first experiences of feeling the sensation and texture of water, to their first submersion and eventually swimming independently. We group our classes by the age of swimmer newborn -1yr, 1-2yrs & 2-3yrs. Find our more about these classes and how to prepare for them below.
Sensory Adult and Child Lessons
Our Sensory Adult & Child lessons are specially designed for babies under six months old, providing a calm, gentle and nurturing introduction to swimming and the water.
With a maximum of just five babies and their parents or carers per class, our teachers can tailor activities to the needs of each little swimmer while families enjoy exploring the water together.
We use lights, projections, music and sensory toys to create an engaging and relaxing experience, helping babies become comfortable and confident in the water while nurturing a lifelong love of swimming..
1 hour Rookie Lifeguarding
